The Minister of Defence moved the resolution for Parliament to support the deployment of the UPDF in South Sudan following an urgent request from President Salva Kiir.
Moved as Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs.
On 20 March 2025, as Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Rt. Hon. Jacob Oboth moved a motion for a resolution of Parliament to support the deployment of the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces in South Sudan.
He told the House that civil unrest had erupted in South Sudan's Upper Nile State at the start of March, and that on 10 March 2025 President Salva Kiir had requested President Yoweri Museveni for urgent military support "in order to avert a potential security catastrophe", in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation and the Status of Forces Agreement.
"The deployment of UPDF in South Sudan has previously enabled and will continue to enable the stabilisation of security, peace enforcement, protection of lives and prevention of further escalation of conflict in South Sudan, which is beneficial to Uganda, the region and Africa at large," he said, adding that it was done "in a spirit of brotherhood, solidarity and shared historical and regional ties between the two countries."
The motion was seconded by Hon. Gilbert Olanya, and Parliament approved the deployment.
